Mom's Review
This is one of our favorite books. The images and the language have provided lots to
look at and think about.
My husband was not too impressed with the pictures in this children’s book, but the children
love animals, and this book is full of them. Every page has animals that might live on a small pond.
The animals are not detailed, but they are clear and interesting to look at. One of the most impressive
things our daughter did early on our readings of this book was locate the frog on every page. On one of
the pages, I couldn’t even find the frog. It was very large in the background, sort of like a watermark,
but Sophie had no trouble finding it, and I was so proud. Almost every time we read In the Small, Small
Pond, we locate the frog.
The language of the book is fun for the kids. The writer uses words I don’t use in every day conversation
with the children, so they get to learn new words as we read and discuss the words and pictures.
In the Small, Small Pond is also fun for me to read because the words are unique. I get a little tired of
the basic vocabulary some children’s books use. Because the book has short rhymes, the children quickly
memorized lines from the book and would “read” along with me.
This book has been a favorite of ours from the time our daughter was one and is still popular with us now.
We highly recommend this book.

Dad's Review
This children's book has been a favorite since the kids were very little.
I think the short, catchy phrases are what makes the book so attractive to the kids.
I wasn't too impressed with the pictures at first, but I now appreciate the originality.
One thing that's fun about the book is the frog that shows up on every page.
We always ask our kids to point out the frog. It won the Caldecott award which, I think,
says something about the quality and originality of the book.
